Maximise your chances of success in research applications!
19-21 September 2017
Organised by the ERAdiate project at the University of Žilina, in cooperation with the Slovak Scientific and Technical Information Centre (CVTI SR), the Grants Week provided comprehensive information and advice on how to find the most relevant European and Slovak funding programmes and how to write professional and competitive grant proposals.
The event was open to the research community (Postdocs, PhD students and research support staff). Young researchers in particular benefited from attending the Grants Week to develop their competences and knowledge to get their research ideas turned into successful proposals.

Day 1 – Tuesday 19 September

Sean McCarthy has been involved in all aspects of European Research since 1980. He has been active as a researcher, research manager, research group leader, and company director. Today he specialises in helping organisations design and implement their European Research Strategies. In 2011 the European Commission published a list of the top 100 research organisations participating in Framework 7. Dr. McCarthy provides training courses in 48 of these research organisations.
Since 1995 more than 55,000 participants have attended his training courses. Dr. McCarthy has presented training courses in 290 different research centres in 29 countries throughout Europe. Prof. Martin Klimo  Session:

Martin Klimo received his diploma in telecommunication engineering from the University of Transport and Communication Zilina in 1973. Since 1990 he worked as an Associated Professor, and in 2003 he was appointed a professor of Applied Informatics.
His research interests include communication theory, queuing theory and fuzzy logic implementation by nanotechnology. He focused on these disciplines mainly from speech point of view: packet networks performance for voice transmission (VOIP quality), text-to-speech systems, and speech recognition. His actual interest is memristor-based fuzzy computing. He participated in the projects: COPERNICUS #62, COST 242, COST257, EURESCOM P1112, COST 279 COST 290, VEGA 1-2039-5, and he was a reviewer of the EURESCOM projects P603, P806-GI and P 906-GI. He participated in ETSI Speech Transmission Quality group, and he was the national delegate in ICT Committee FP7. Currently he works in projects APVV-14-0560 “Resistive switching structures for pattern recognition“ and ICT COST Action IC1401 Memristors – Devices, Models, Circuits, Systems and Applications (MemoCiS). He is the national delegate in H2020-ICT Committee. |
| Prof. Tatiana Kovacikova

Tatiana Kovacikova is senior researcher in the ERA Chair project on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) at the University of Zilina, Slovakia.
In 2016, she was nominated a National delegate for H2020 PC on Smart, Green and Integrated Transport. She has been active in standardisation for many years, currently she represents Slovakia in CEN TC 278 on ITS. From June 2013 till October 2015, she hold the position of the Head of Science Operations at the COST Association in Brussels. In 2013, she was appointed Full Professor in the Applied Informatics. From 2009 to 2013 she was the Head of the Department of InfoCom Networks at the University of Zilina, Slovakia. Her research interests include Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), in particular network architectures, services and applications. She has been involved in a number national and international research projects including COPERNICUS, INCO-COPERNICUS, EURESCOM and EC FP projects. From 2002 to 2013, she was involved in the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) as a leader or member of Specialist Task Forces for CLOUD, TISPAN (Telecommunications and Internet converged Services and Protocols for Advanced Networking) and ITS Technical Committees. In 2003, she got the SIEMENS AWARD for leading the research group in the field of IP telephony. In 1996, she received her PhD in telecommunication systems from the University of Transport and Telecommunications in Zilina, former Czechoslovakia. She received her diploma in telecommunication engineering from the same university. |
| Assoc. Prof. Peter Bracinik

Peter Bracinik received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Žilina, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, in 2002 and 2008, respectively. He is currently Associate Professor at the Department of Power Electrical Systems, Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Žilina. Since 2016, he has been holding the position of Vice-Dean for Education at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
His research interests include control and management of power transmission and distribution systems, application of Smart Grid concept to the MV networks and power management of intelligent buildings. He has been working as a National Expert for “Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy” for Horizon 2020 since 2014. |
| JUDr. Viera Petrášová

Viera Petrášová graduated at the Faculty of Law at Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica.
In 2006, she joined the College of Europe in Belgium, where she was involved in the project of harmonization of EU law as well as the assessment of the state of transposition of the EU directives into the Slovak national law. Following her return to Slovakia, she worked in the law firm and became member of the Slovak Bar Association. Currently, she is the national contact point for Legal and Financial Affairs, European Research Infrastructure and Innovation in SMEs, Access to Risk Financing at the Slovak Center for Scientific and Technical Information. She is also an external PhD student at the Pan-European University drafting the thesis: Comparative study of foreign and domestic jurisprudence to enforce intellectual property rights. |

Katarina Svitkova is a graduate of the Secondary School of Library Studies in Bratislava and has approximately 17 years of experience in the field of library and information science.
She has been working in the Scientific Library of the Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information (SCSTI) since 2004 and at the Open Access Contact Office within the Open Science and Research Support Department in this institution since 2016.She addresses issues of Open Science and Open Access to the scientific research results, as well as providing support to researchers in open publishing. She is a member of NOAD (National Open Access Desk) for OpenAIRE 2020 project in Slovakia. Mr. Roman Behul is senior consultant at Atos Slovakia and coordinator of international projects.
He graduated from the University of Economics in Bratislava (Faculty of National Economy) in 1978 (Dipl.Ing.), from the Banking Institute in Luxembourg in 1993 and did Postgraduate studies at the Banking Academy in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, from 1994 to 1997. Since 2011, Roman has been working for Atos Slovakia. Roman is the Coordinator in H2020 “C2NET” (FoF-01-2014, Number -639909-C2 NET: Process Optimisation of Manufacturing Assets), project manager in H2020 “MONICA“ and expert the project „NEWTON“ (in all those H2020 projects, Atos Slovakia is a partner). Nataša Hurtová has been working as a National Contact Point and National Expert for Bioeconomy and Euratom for HORIZON 2020 since 2014.
Before she was involved in many projects implemented with the financial support of the EU Structural Funds, Cohesion Fund and Framework program as a Head of the Project management and implementation department. She also has experience as a Project consultant, Expert adviser in the domain of agri-environment, agriculture, project activities and National Contact Point for cooperation with the COPA and COGECA. |
| RNDr. Soňa Ftáčniková

Soňa Ftáčniková graduated as RNDr. (Rerum Naturalium Doctor) from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Department of Biophysics of Comenius University, Bratislava in 1982. In 1991, she obtained her PhD in the field of Radiation Biophysics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Comenius University, Bratislava.
She has been Vice director of the Slovak Research and Development Agency (SRDA) from 2001 to 2006, building new established SRDA and organizing domestic and international scientific projects evaluation in Slovakia. From 2006 to 2011, she held the position of Executive Secretary of Ethics Committee at SRDA. From 2007 to 2009, RNDr. Ftáčniková was the National Contact Point for IDEAS under FP7 EU, Brussel. She chaired the working group of European Science Foundation Member Organization Forum on Research Integrity (ESF MOF RI) for 2 years, from 2009 to 2011. She is the head of bi- and multilateral international collaboration in SRDA; the National Contact for the European Science Foundation, Strasbourg; Slovak representative in European Network on Research Integrity (ENRIO); the National Contact Point for ERC grants – Excellent Science in H2020 and the National Contact Point for Ethics in H2020. She is author of 9 publications on the theme of Ethics, including Fostering Research Integrity in Europe: Executive Report by ESF Member Organization Forum on Research Integrity, 2010 and Ethics in H2020 (in SK), 2014. |
| Prof. Milan Dado

Milan Dado is Full Professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (Department of Telecommunication and Multimedia). He is former dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, former rector of the University of Zilina and former president of the Slovak rectors’ conference.
He had the opportunity to develop international activities in research and education abroad, e.g. at the York University Canada, Northern Telecom and Bell Canada in 1993, at the Royal Institute of Technology Stockholm in 1990 and at the Vienna University of Technology in 1981-1982. He has visited many other foreign institutions during the last 25 years. Prof. Dado has been actively involved in European research and education programmes (TEMPUS, COST, LEONARDO, Socrates, 5th, 6th and 7th Framework Programme, Horizon 2020, European University Association projects…) and has managed national projects related to information and communication technologies, intelligent transportation systems, regional innovation strategies and e-learning. He has been a member of several international committees and is currently COST programme national coordinator, member of COST Committee of Senior Officials as well as Executive Board member of COST. As project coordinator of ERAdiate, Prof. Dado is responsible for the project implementation as foreseen in the Grant Agreement with the European Commission (EC). He chairs project meetings and is responsible for progress and final reports to the EC. |
| Dr Giuseppe Lugano

Giuseppe Lugano joined the ERAdiate team in September 2016 as a Senior Researcher in Intelligent Transport Systems. Previously, he worked from 2011 to 2016 as a Science Officer at COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) where he gained extensive experience in the management of trans-disciplinary Science and Technology networks across Europe.
As a researcher, Giuseppe contributed to the R&D activities of ICT multinationals such as TeliaSonera (2004-2008) and Nokia (2010). His scientific interests span a wide range of topics in conceptual and application-specific areas of social computing such as digital community design, mobile social networks, social robotics, educational technologies, green ICT and smart mobility solutions. Some of his publications received broad international attention: “Mobile social networking in theory and practice” is one of the reference publications in its area and the ~5.000 downloads of his PhD thesis on “Digital Community Design” make this dissertation one of the most popular ones from the series “Jyväskylä studies in computing”. In 2009 he received an Award nomination as best Early Stage Researcher in the COST Action 298 “Participation in Broadband Society”. Giuseppe holds a PhD in Cognitive Science from the University of Jyväskylä, in Finland, and a MSc in Computer Science from the University of Bologna, in Italy. |
| Dr Peter Počta

Peter Počta received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from University of Žilina, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Slovakia in 2004 and 2007, respectively. During his Ph.D. study, he was awarded a number of fellowships. Firstly, he spent 3 months as an Erasmus student in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Chair of Telecommunications of the Dresden University of Technology, Germany where he collaborated on testing principles over ADSL access lines. Secondly, he was with Alcatel-Lucent, R&D center, Network Integration department, Stuttgart, Germany where he investigated some impacts on speech quality in WiMAX system.
He is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Multimedia and Information-Communication Technology of the University of Žilina and is involved with International Standardization through the ETSI TC STQ as well as ITU-T SG12. His research interests include speech, audio, video and audiovisual quality assessment, speech intelligibility, multimedia communication and QoE management. He has published over 60 refereed papers in international journals and conferences including Acta Acustica united with Acustica, Advances in Multimedia (Hindawi), AEÜ – International Journal of Electronics and Communications (Elsevier), Speech Communication (Elsevier), IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting, MESAQIN and QoMEX conferences. He serves as an external reviewer for the Journal of Systems and Software (Elsevier), Computer Standards&Interfaces (Elsevier), Speech Communication (Elsevier), Telecommunication Systems (Springer), Quality and User Experience (Springer) and IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing and several conferences in area of multimedia quality and communication networks, e.g. QoMEX, QCMan. |
| MSc Ömer Ceylan & M.A. Valentina Zuri

Ömer Ceylan, Trainer and Senior Expert at Europa Media, has more than 10 years of direct experience in developing and implementing EU-funded projects and managing EC contracts. He has a thorough knowledge of the European Union’s funding system and a sound understanding of the programming and implementation of various EU funding schemes and programmes and their interrelations. In particular, his knowledge spans across the EU’s energy, environment, sustainable development, competitiveness, research and innovation, enlargement and external policies and the associated funding schemes and programmes such as FP6/7, Horizon 2020, CIP Eco-innovation, LIFE/LIFE+, Structural Funds and EuropeAid.
Ömer is involved on a daily basis in the conceptualisation and development of new Horizon 2020 proposals, while at the same time overseeing the implementation of 10 ongoing Horizon 2020 projects. He is an environmental engineer from Istanbul Technical University (ITU) and holds an MSc in Environmental Management from Aalborg University (AAU). Valentina Zuri, Trainer and Project Manager at Europa Media, has been managing projects under FP7 and Horizon 2020 and developing and submitting proposals under various EU programmes such as Erasmus+, Daphne and Horizon 2020, specifically in the areas of ICT, Entrepreneurship, Security, Energy Efficiency and Social Sciences and Humanities. Currently she is involved in the management of the H2020 PLANHEAT project and contributing to the management of other ongoing H2020 projects. Earlier, she was responsible for the dissemination and exploitation activities in the FP7 project PlasCarb, and contributing to the implementation of the Horizon 2020 project MY-WAY, for which Europa Media was the coordinator. Valentina holds a Bachelor of Art in Media and Journalism and a Master of Art in International Relations and European Studies, both from the University of Florence, Italy. |
| Prof. Ing. Peter Brida

Peter Brida obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Telecommunications from University of Zilina, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, in 2002 and 2006, respectively. He spent 3 months as researcher at the Wireless Telecommunications Laboratory, University of Patras, Greece, where he worked in the field of positioning algorithms for wireless networks. In 2006, he participated in the Summer School for Ph.D. students on Highlights in Microtechnology in Neuchâtel, Switzerland.
Since November 2016, he has been holding the position of Vice-dean for Development and International Co-operation at Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Zilina. His research interests include wireless positioning in mobile radio networks, satellite navigation systems, location based services and intelligent transport systems. Peter Brida is full professor from 2017. He is the author or co-author of more than 60 scientific papers published in scientific journals and presented at international conferences. He has been a member of Technical Programme Committees for several conferences such as IPIN (Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation), ACIIDS (Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems) and ICCCI (International Conference on Computational Collective Intelligence). In the past, he was chairman of several invited and special sessions at various conferences. He was guest editor of the special issue titled “Enabling Technologies for Smart Mobile Services” in impact factor journal Mobile Information Systems (Hindawi). |
| Veronika Mešková

Veronika Mešková has been working as a R&D coordinator at the Research Centre, University of Žilina since January 2014. She provides support to researchers in the area of funding opportunities search, consultations on project proposals writing, review of project proposals, writing of non-scientific project parts (project management, dissemination and communication), communication management in project implementation phase. She is specialised in European funding programmes, mainly Horizon 2020 scheme but have also got experience with others (e.g. Interreg, Visegrad Fund, etc.). Before joining the Research Centre, she worked in the commercial sector and is currently trying to transfer this experience to her daily job at the University. She graduated from the Faculty of Economics of Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica (study programme: economics and management). |

Peter Beňo graduated at Faculty of business management at University of Economics in Bratislava. He has gained his experiences in preparation of project proposals and implementation of the projects including setting the processes for successful project implementation in the last 11 years during which he worked as NCP for legal and financial issues and NCP for Security in FP7 and H2020.
Peter previously worked for 4 years as a teacher at the Faculty of business management (University of Economics) and for 3 years as a head of Unit of framework programmes in the Slovak research and development agency, where he was responsible for preparation and implementation of competitive calls related to support the SK participation in the framework programmes. |

Dominika Kacejová is a Programmes Coordinator at SAIA, n.o. (Slovak Academic Information Agency) and EURAXESS Centre Coordinator for Žilina and Trenčín regions. Using her international working experience in the United Kingdom as a community interpreter, she is currently assisting international researchers coming to Žilina and Trenčín regions and providing assistance in matters related to their mobility. Juraj Sinay is the President of the Automotive Industry Association of the Slovak Republic and head of the Department of Safety and Quality, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Technical University in Košice. From 2000 to 2007, he was the Rector of the Technical University in Košice; from 2003 to 2005, the President of the Slovak Rector’s Commission and from 2007 to 2015 the Vice-Rector of the Technical University in Košice for Marketing and External Relations. He was advisor to the Minister of Education, Science and Research from 2008 and 2010, and to the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport between 2012 and 2014. In 2015, he was elected President of the Automotive Industry Association of the Slovak Republic.In the field of science and research, he deals with systems of risk management of technical systems in integrated security systems in the context of the Intelligent Industry Strategy. He is the author and co-author of 15 monographs and 35 scientific articles in foreign sources. Scientific and professional recognition abroad can be documented by the awarding of Honorary Doctor degrees at the University of Bergen in Wuppertal (NSR), University of Miskolc (Hungary), University of Uzhgorod (Ukraine) and the Technical University of Ostrava, Czech Republic. |

Róbert Hudec received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Technical University in Košice, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, Slovakia, in 1998 and 2003, respectively. From 2016, he has been Full Professor at the Department of Multimedia and Information-Communication Technology (MICT), Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Zilina, Slovakia. Nowadays, he is head of Department MICT, head of Laboratory of Digital Video Processing, and head of Laboratory of Health Applications.
Areas of his research include digital image filtration, segmentation, combined low-level description, image/video object classification, video concealment, 3D object description and 3D reconstruction. From 2005 his research interests have been covering also systems, services, terminals and intelligent textile sensors for e-/m-health applications. He is author or co-author of more than 125 research papers. He received Werner von Siemens Excellent Award and Jozef Murgas Award for his research on image filtration in 2003 and 2007, respectively, and Award of „Vice premier and minister of school for science and research“ in the category: celebrity of research and development till 35 years old for his research on e/m-heath systems and terminals in 2006. He led or partcipated in more than 35 EU or national projects granted by EDA (European Defence Agency), EUREKA, FP6, FP7, COST, APVV, VEGA, etc. including industry oriented projects of applied research. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE, Signal Processing Society, Piscataway, USA) and since 2015 he has been a member of the advisory board for technic sciences of the Slovak Research and Development Agency (APVV, Slovakia). |

The event has no admission fee thanks to the sponsorship of the ERAdiate project. However, a contribution of 50 euro will be charged to cover the costs of catering and event materials. The registration will be finalised and your place confirmed only following the payment of such contribution.
Cancellation and refund policy
Cancellations must be done in writing (e-mail). 50% of the registration fee will be refunded for cancellations received before 19 August 2017. After 19 August no refund will be made. Participants who cancel after 19 August or do not attend the Grants Week without giving notice are liable to pay the entire registration fee. All refunds will be processed after the event.
The Grants Week will take place in the following meeting rooms:
DAY 1 (19/9) and DAY 2 (20/9): UNIZA Scientific Council Room, located in Nová Menza (Vysokoškolákov 26, Zilina).
DAY 3 (21/9): Aula 2. For the morning session, participants will then be guided to rooms AF104 and AF106. These 3 rooms are located in the Rectorat of the University of Žilina (Univerzitná 8215/1).
